INTRODUCTION

 

THE MATH OF COMEDY

Explanation of the different categories of Daytime (U/5, Dayplayer, Contract role). Daily routine on a soap. How a script evolves – outline to actors hands.

 

Precision and specificity are paramount to performing comedic material. Actors will perform the WORD PERFECT exercise with American Sit-Com scenes in class.

     

THE AUDITION

   

In the room with the Casting Director. How to approach an U/5 (50 words or less).

 

Discussing the different stages of the creative process
Get material, seeing the actor’s instincts in action – by doing cold reading, will be given memorization & rehearsal tips

EXERCISE: U/5

   

Split into groups - each group having the same sides. Class discussion and critique on each group. Actors work with notes given and repeat scenes.

THE DAY PLAYER ROLE

 

RULE OF THREE. THE SIX TRIPLETS

Discussing the actors purpose as a Day Player. Actors perform Day Player scenes – class discussion and critique.

 

Actors will learn why THREE is funny: the six triplets to be applied to comedic material in order to find the jokes. Actors will be given an American Sit-Com scene to break apart into individual jokes and perform in class.

THE BLACKOUT EXERCISE

 

THE FIRST 4 COMEDIC DEVICES

The only class where they will be paired up with another actor. Perform scenes in front of the class. Objective: Make choices but be flexible enough to adjust when they get information from their partner. Objective: Listen, work in the moment.

 

Triplets only reveal that a joke exists not how to perform the joke. The day’s lesson will contain the first 4 comedic devises to be applied to the triplet in order to make a joke work. Participants will be given American Sit-Com scenes to first break apart in to triplets, then apply these four devices and perform in class.

CALLBACK FOR A CONTRACT ROLE

 

THE REMAINING 4 COMEDIC DEVICES

Split into groups and critique the scenes discussing environment, strong choices, working “beyond the written word”.

 

The lesson will cover the remaining 4 comedic devises to be applied to the triplet in order to make a joke work.
(8 total devises) Actors will be given American Sit-Com scenes to first break apart in to triplets, then apply these four devices and perform in class.
